After weeks of growing speculation over their political future amid the lingering leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The political move marks a significant realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape as preparations intensify for the next electoral cycle.

Obi, Dickson and Kwankwaso

The duo formalised their entry into the NDC during a visit to the residence of the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, where they held high-level consultations with party leaders and stakeholders.

According to sources familiar with the meeting, Obi and Kwankwaso arrived at the venue at about 5:14 p.m. and immediately proceeded into discussions with Dickson and other top party officials.

The meeting later moved into a closed-door session, which lasted for over an hour before ending at approximately 6:45 p.m.

The consultations are believed to be part of broader political engagements aimed at consolidating opposition forces ahead of the 2027 presidential contest.

Speaking after the meeting, Kwankwaso called on his supporters and political associates across the country to align with the NDC and actively participate in strengthening the party’s national structure.

He urged members to work collectively toward building what he described as a credible political alternative.

Obi also addressed party members, reportedly advising against litigation and public disputes.

He encouraged internal mechanisms for conflict resolution, stressing the need for unity and discipline within the party.

The former Anambra governor reportedly emphasised that internal cohesion would be critical to the NDC’s ability to present a strong challenge in the next general election.

The development is widely seen as a major political boost for the NDC.

Both Obi and Kwankwaso command significant grassroots followings in different parts of the country, with strong support bases across the South-East and North-West respectively.

Obi and Kwankwaso join NDC

Political observers believe their entry into the NDC could reshape opposition politics and potentially create a more formidable coalition ahead of 2027.

Their defection also comes amid continued uncertainty surrounding internal disputes within opposition parties, particularly the ADC, which has faced prolonged legal and leadership challenges.

Analysts say the move could trigger fresh alignments as other political actors assess their options ahead of the election season.

The NDC has yet to disclose how the integration of both political heavyweights will affect its internal power structure or future presidential nomination process.

However, the development is expected to generate renewed momentum within the party as it seeks to expand its national relevance.

What You Should Know

The defection of Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC represents one of the most significant opposition realignments ahead of 2027.

Both politicians remain influential figures with established support bases and previous presidential ambitions. Their move could strengthen the NDC’s national visibility and alter calculations within Nigeria’s opposition bloc.

However, the long-term impact will depend on how effectively the party manages internal interests, resolves leadership expectations, and presents a unified front.

If properly managed, the alliance could emerge as a serious force in the race against the ruling APC.
