The political landscape in Northern Nigeria is set for a major shift as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has directed members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling what could become an intense contest for control of Kano State and influence across the region.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the movement’s spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed, confirmed that the former Kano State governor has concluded arrangements to join a broader opposition coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Kwankwasiyya Movement

“The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform all its members across Nigeria and the general public that our Supreme Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has concluded all necessary arrangements to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC),” the statement read.

According to the announcement, Kwankwaso is expected to formally register with the party on Monday, March 30, 2026, at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano.

The movement also directed its large support base nationwide to immediately adopt the new political alignment.

“Consequently, all members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement are hereby directed to proceed and register with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in their respective wards, local government areas, and states,” the statement added.

Supporters were further encouraged to actively engage in party activities and contribute to strengthening the ADC into a viable national platform.

The move is widely viewed as a calculated political realignment that could significantly reshape power dynamics ahead of 2027, particularly in Kano State—one of the most politically influential states in Northern Nigeria and a key battleground in presidential elections.

Analysts believe Kwankwaso’s entry into the African Democratic Congress, backed by the well-structured Kwankwasiyya Movement, could reinvigorate opposition forces and present a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The statement framed the decision as being driven by national interest and democratic ideals.

“This strategic decision… reflects our unwavering commitment to the advancement of democratic values, good governance, and the collective aspirations of the people,” the group stated.

Reaffirming its ideological stance, the movement stressed the importance of safeguarding democratic principles and respecting the will of the people, declaring itself united in the pursuit of “a better and more inclusive Nigeria.”

With this development, the contest for Kano State and the broader Northern political bloc appears to be entering a new phase, one that could redefine alliances and significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 general elections.

What you should know

The decision by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to move his Kwankwasiyya Movement into the African Democratic Congress marks a major political realignment ahead of 2027.

Kano State plays a critical role in Nigeria’s electoral map, and this shift could strengthen opposition efforts against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

With a strong grassroots structure, Kwankwaso’s influence may reshape alliances in the North and determine how competitive the opposition becomes in the next presidential election.
