New 2027 presidential candidate, running mate emerges
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has emerged as the presidential candidate of the Allied People’s Movement (APM) for the 2027 general elections, while former Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Lawal Musa Daura, has been picked as his running mate.
The announcement was made on Thursday after the APM held its national convention at Rilwan Adamu Square in Bauchi State.
Makinde’s emergence was disclosed in a statement issued by the Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, in Ibadan.
The choice of Daura gives the APM presidential ticket a candidate with years of experience in Nigeria’s intelligence and security sector.
He served as the Director-General of the SSS from 2015 to 2018 before leaving the position.
Makinde, who accepted the party’s presidential ticket, said his administration at the national level would focus on tackling insecurity, reducing poverty and improving the living conditions of Nigerians.
The governor said his decision to work with Daura was based on the former security chief’s experience and knowledge of national security matters.
He said the country needed leaders who could bring practical solutions to the security problems affecting communities across the country.
Makinde also called on politicians and Nigerians who share his plans for the country to join him ahead of the 2027 election.
He said cooperation among people with similar goals would be needed to address the problems facing the nation.
The governor blamed part of the hardship being experienced by Nigerians on policies that were not properly carried out over the years.
He said his experience running Oyo State had given him knowledge that could be applied to national governance if he wins the presidential election.
He also spoke about the decision to hold the convention in Bauchi, pointing to the state’s place in Nigeria’s political history.
Bauchi was the home state of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first Prime Minister.
Makinde has governed Oyo State since 2019 and is now officially entering the race for the 2027 presidency under the APM.
His selection places him among the politicians seeking to lead Nigeria after the 2027 general elections.
His running mate, Daura, brings a background in intelligence and security to the ticket, while Makinde offers experience from his years as a state governor.
