The Lagos State Government has shut down an Access Bank branch at Land Bridge Avenue, Oniru, Victoria Island, after it was found releasing untreated faecal waste into public drainage channels.

The action follows a report from a whistleblower that prompted officials to investigate the facility.

Authorities from the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) carried out an enforcement operation on Wednesday night.

Their investigation confirmed that the bank was discharging raw sewage into local drains, creating a strong foul smell and harming the environment.

The government said this violated state environmental laws.

During the inspection, enforcement officers were reportedly met with resistance from the bank’s security and management staff, who prevented access and allegedly attacked the officials.

The agency collected samples of the wastewater, which tested positive for contamination.

The Lagos State Government stated that it will take legal steps to hold individuals involved in the assault accountable.

Officials will return to the site to enforce closure in line with environmental laws, reinforcing that no one is exempt from compliance.

Access Bank has not yet responded to the incident or the allegations.

This case adds to previous conflicts between enforcement teams and establishments accused of breaking sanitation rules in Lagos, including a similar confrontation at a restaurant in December 2025.

The government maintained that all facilities must follow environmental regulations to protect public health and the local environment.
