Security has been significantly tightened around Rainbow Event Centre as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) proceeds with its national convention in Abuja.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), about 7,000 delegates are expected to participate in the exercise, which will determine members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for the next four years.

Security operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were deployed across the venue, with strict screening procedures carried out at entry points. Patrol vehicles were also stationed at strategic locations, while journalists and delegates underwent thorough checks before gaining access.
The convention comes amid a lingering leadership crisis within the party, as rival factions continue to lay claim to control of the ADC.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier suspended recognition of all leadership factions following a Court of Appeal ruling and ongoing litigation over the party’s leadership.
Speaking at the venue, Dino Melaye said the convention would proceed despite attempts to halt it.
“Yesterday, there were deliberate efforts to stop us from holding this convention. All the venues were applied for but were not approved.
“As at 11pm last night, the owners of this venue attempted to cancel this programme, but we stood our ground, and we will proceed with the convention today,” he said.
Also speaking, Kabiru Saje noted that the convention could either produce a new leadership or reaffirm the existing one.

“Despite attempts by authorities to stop the programme yesterday evening, we stood our ground because it is our right to hold this convention.
“Although we faced challenges with securing a venue and had to change locations multiple times, preparations are now in place, and the event will go ahead as planned.
“The convention is expected to start by 11 a.m., and the atmosphere is positive, with delegates arriving and everything properly arranged,” he said.
Saje added that the party remained confident in its leadership, describing it as experienced and committed to progress.
The development marks a critical moment for the ADC as it seeks to resolve internal disputes and strengthen its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
What you should know
The ADC convention is taking place under tight security due to internal leadership disputes and earlier attempts to halt the event.
With INEC suspending recognition of all factions, the outcome of the convention may not immediately resolve the crisis. However, it remains a significant step for the party in asserting its structure and unity.
The heavy security presence reflects concerns about potential disruptions, while the large turnout of delegates signals continued interest in the party’s future direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
