Suspected armed thugs stormed a meeting of members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at Umuoyima Town Hall in Owerri Municipal Local Government Area of Imo State, causing injuries and damaging properties.

The attackers, said to be more than 20 in number, reportedly arrived at the venue in a bus and disrupted the gathering.

They were accused of using dangerous weapons, including guns and knives, during the attack.

Several NDC members were injured in the incident, while items such as chairs and public address systems belonging to the party were reportedly destroyed.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Imo State condemned the incident, describing it as an act of violence that should have no place in political activities.

In a statement issued in Owerri, the party’s State Publicity Secretary, Mac-Donald Amadi, called on political actors in the state to avoid actions that could threaten peace and security.

The ADC said political contests should be based on ideas, policies and peaceful engagement rather than intimidation or attacks on opponents.

The party added that the people of Imo State should not be exposed to violence because of political ambitions, urging leaders and youths to support peaceful participation in democratic processes.

The ADC also called on security agencies to investigate the incident, arrest those responsible and ensure that justice is served.
