Former Kano State governor and vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed an agreement stating that Obi would spend only one term in office if elected president in 2027.

Kwankwaso made the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme while speaking about Obi’s repeated promise to serve for only four years.

The former governor said he trusts Obi’s commitment and does not expect him to go against the agreement when the time comes.

Kwankwaso explained that the arrangement was not based on a verbal understanding alone, adding that documents were signed between both men and another agreement was reached with the party.

He said the agreement provides that after Obi completes a four-year tenure from 2027 to 2031, discussions would begin on returning power to the northern region.

According to him, the arrangement was reached after considering the need for balance between the northern and southern parts of the country.

Kwankwaso said the agreement involves both sides working together as members of the same political family after Obi’s tenure to ensure a smooth transition of power.

He added that the decision to support a southern candidate for a single term was part of the political understanding reached by the group.

Speaking on his decision to accept the vice-presidential position despite his previous presidential ambition, Kwankwaso said the current political situation informed the choice.

He explained that the party believes a four-year southern presidency would create room for unity before power returns to the North.

Kwankwaso also said the party has immediate plans it is working on, while other long-term political strategies would be considered in the future.

Obi has repeatedly stated that he would serve only one term if elected president in 2027, saying he believes four years would be enough to carry out his plans for the country.
