Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has formally resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and announced her defection to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while also declaring her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu made the announcement through a statement shared on her X handle on Wednesday, explaining that her decision was driven by what she described as a clearer understanding of the country’s political future and her continued support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

According to her, “The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works.”

She explained that her political journey within the ADC was initially inspired by her support for Obi, noting that her latest move is a continuation of that political commitment.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she stated.

Beyond her defection, Yesufu also revealed that she would be actively seeking elective office under her new political platform.

“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she announced.

The activist said she ensured a smooth and respectful departure from the ADC, adding that she concluded all her responsibilities within the party before making the switch.

Reflecting on her time in the ADC, Yesufu expressed gratitude to party members and colleagues she worked with, describing the experience as valuable and impactful.

“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” she said.

She added that her time in the party offered her significant political experience and thanked members for their cooperation and support.

Yesufu’s move comes amid growing political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape following the recent defection of Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC.

Their entry into the party has triggered a wave of defections from the ADC, reshaping opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The activist’s declaration for the FCT Senate seat now adds another dimension to the ongoing political shifts, positioning her as one of the notable opposition figures preparing for the next electoral cycle.

What You Should Know

Aisha Yesufu’s defection to the NDC reflects the broader opposition realignment currently unfolding ahead of the 2027 elections.

Known for her outspoken activism and strong political advocacy, her decision to contest for the FCT Senate seat marks a transition from civil society influence to direct electoral participation.

Her alignment with Peter Obi further strengthens the NDC’s growing profile as a new opposition platform attracting high-profile political figures and supporters seeking an alternative force in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
