Fresh developments have emerged in the controversial death of 28-year-old Oghenemine Ogidi, popularly known as Mine, as police have reportedly arrested two suspects linked to the movement of the firearm and ammunition that allegedly led to the fatal encounter with ASP Nuhu Usman in Effurun, Delta State.

According to reports first published by Vanguard Newspaper, one of the arrested suspects is believed to be the Bayelsa-based sender of the Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition allegedly transported from Yenagoa to Effurun.

Verily News gathered that both suspects were moved into the Effurun Area Command under the Delta State Police Command on Wednesday night as investigators intensify efforts to unravel the full circumstances surrounding the killing and identify all individuals connected to the movement of the firearm.

Although the Delta State Police Command has yet to release an official statement on the arrests, sources close to the ongoing investigation confirmed the development.

“It’s confirmed. They just brought in two suspects Wednesday night,” a source familiar with the matter reportedly told Vanguard.

The source further disclosed that one of the suspects allegedly sent the gun through a transport company from Yenagoa to Effurun.

The late Ogidi was said to have gone to pick up the parcel for onward delivery to its supposed owner in Sapele before the incident that led to his death.

“It’s not been announced who is who yet, but I can tell you for free that one of them is the person who sent the gun through a transport line from Yenagoa to Effurun, from where Mine picked it to send to a Sapele owner at the Effurun Motor Park where he was caught and extrajudicially killed by ASP Nuhu and accomplices,” the source said.

Investigators are also trying to establish the identity and role of the second suspect.

According to the source, it remains unclear whether the second person arrested is the driver who transported the parcel from Yenagoa.

“Like I said, it’s not clear if the other person among the two could be the driver who brought the parcel from Yenagoa. But it’s clear that the sender is among the duo just apprehended. And the trail continues for the other suspects,” the source added.

The death of Mine Ogidi triggered widespread outrage across Delta State after allegations surfaced that he was extrajudicially shot during the interception of the firearm parcel at Effurun Motor Park.

The incident drew public condemnation and renewed calls for accountability, justice, and an independent investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.

ASP Nuhu Usman, who has been repeatedly named in public discussions surrounding the incident, remains central to the investigation.

Human rights advocates and civil society groups have continued to demand transparency from the Delta State Police Command as the investigation progresses.

The latest arrests are expected to shed more light on the chain of events that led to Ogidi’s death and could help establish whether his killing was avoidable.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have not disclosed whether additional arrests are expected.

What You Should Know

The killing of Mine Ogidi has become a major flashpoint in conversations around alleged police brutality and extrajudicial actions in Delta State.

The arrest of two suspects linked to the movement of the firearm could help investigators establish the full context of the incident and determine accountability. Public attention remains focused not only on the source of the weapon but also on whether law enforcement officers followed due process during the interception.

The outcome of this investigation could influence broader conversations about police conduct, operational accountability, and justice mechanisms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
