The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has revealed plans to move its May 9 national convention from Abuja to Bauchi State, following difficulties in finding an appropriate venue in Abuja.
The party’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, made the announcement on Wednesday, shortly before the commencement of screening for aspirants at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.
Gombe said the party opted for Bauchi as the new venue in line with constitutional provisions allowing conventions to be held anywhere in the country.
“Given difficulties in securing a venue, we decided to move it to Bauchi. Constitutionally, the convention can take place anywhere in the country,” he said.
He expressed appreciation to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for providing a venue for the exercise despite political differences.
The convention is considered a key milestone in the party’s preparations for the next general elections, as it seeks to expand its national presence and field candidates across major elective positions.
The SDP has constituted key committees, including the Screening, Electoral, and Convention committees, alongside several sub-committees to handle specific responsibilities in order to ensure a transparent and credible process.
Gombe assured party members that the exercise would be conducted in line with established guidelines, stressing that all aspirants would undergo screening for positions ranging from the presidency to state and legislative offices.
The screening exercise, which has commenced in Abuja, is expected to determine the eligibility of aspirants ahead of the convention where candidates will emerge.
Chairman of the Screening Committee, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar Lima (retd.), stressed the importance of diligence and integrity in the vetting process, warning that only qualified aspirants would be approved to contest.
