The Nigerian Army on Wednesday laid to rest Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other soldiers who were killed in a recent insurgent attack in Borno State.

The burial ceremony took place at the Maimalari Cantonment cemetery in Maiduguri, where the fallen troops were accorded full military honours in recognition of their service and sacrifice.

The soldiers lost their lives on April 9 during coordinated attacks by suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters on military positions in Benisheikh, a key location along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway.

In a statement shared on its official Facebook handle, the Army described the ceremony as solemn and emotionally charged.

“In a solemn and emotionally charged ceremony, the nation on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, laid to rest late Brigadier General Omo Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other gallant soldiers who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

“The burial, held at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri, Borno State, was marked by deep sorrow, honour, and reflection,” the statement read.

The Army added that the fallen soldiers were given full military honours, noting that their sacrifice highlights the cost of safeguarding the nation.

“Their sacrifice serves as a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid daily by members of the Armed Forces to safeguard the peace, unity, and security of Nigeria,” it said.

Among dignitaries present at the ceremony were Babagana Umara Zulum and the Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, alongside other senior military officers.

They described the deceased as patriots who gave their lives in defence of the country, as prayers were offered for their souls and citations of their service were read in the presence of their families.

The Army noted that the grief of the bereaved families reflects the human cost of Nigeria’s ongoing security operations, while also emphasizing that the courage of the fallen soldiers remains a source of national pride.

What you should know

The burial of Brigadier General Braimah and other soldiers underscores the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to launch attacks on military formations.

The Benisheikh incident highlights the strategic importance of securing key transport routes in Borno State. Despite sustained military operations, insurgent threats persist, resulting in casualties among security personnel.

The ceremony also reflects the military’s tradition of honouring fallen heroes, while drawing attention to the sacrifices made daily to maintain national security and stability.
