The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a consequential adjustment to the campaign timeline for the Osun State governorship election, following its earlier decision to shift the poll by one week.
The electoral body had, in February, revised its timetable for the 2027 election cycle, moving the Osun governorship election from August 8 to August 15, 2026. As a result, the deadline for political campaigns has also been adjusted.
In line with Section 98(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, campaigns must end no later than 24 hours before election day. With the new date in place, all campaign activities are now expected to cease by midnight on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The announcement was contained in a statement signed by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee.
“The Commission urges all political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to strictly adhere to the revised timeline,” he said.
Haruna also reiterated the commission’s commitment to maintaining electoral credibility.
“INEC remains committed to the conduct of free, fair, credible and inclusive elections,” he added.
The adjustment ensures compliance with electoral laws while aligning campaign activities with the new election date, as political parties intensify preparations for the Osun governorship contest.
What you should know
INEC’s adjustment reflects the legal requirement that campaigns must end 24 hours before any election.
The shift in Osun’s governorship poll date automatically affected the campaign timeline, ensuring compliance with the Electoral Act. Such changes are critical for maintaining order and fairness in the electoral process.
Political parties must now recalibrate their strategies within the revised window, while INEC continues to emphasize transparency and adherence to guidelines ahead of the election.
