The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, following fresh claims linked to his past online activities.
The opposition party renewed its criticism of the electoral chief after allegations surfaced suggesting he once made posts seen as supportive of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The issue began after a United States-based Nigerian academic, Farooq Kperogi, shared details from an archived X account bearing Amupitan’s name.
The posts were said to show opinions that appeared favourable to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Earlier, the media office of the INEC chairman had warned Nigerians about fake accounts and online fraudsters using false identities to spread misleading information.
The office maintained that the commission remains committed to conducting credible elections and urged the public to depend only on its official communication channels.
Despite that clarification, the claims gained attention online, with many Nigerians debating whether the old posts were real or manipulated.
The discussion quickly spread across social media, drawing mixed reactions from the public.
In its response, the ADC described the development as troubling and said it raises serious questions about the neutrality expected from the head of the electoral body.
The party argued that anyone in charge of overseeing elections must be seen as fair and free from political bias.
The party also raised concerns over reports that attempts may have been made to alter or remove past online records linked to the chairman.
It warned that such actions could damage public trust in the electoral process.
As part of its next steps, the ADC said it plans to submit petitions to relevant institutions within and outside Nigeria, including the Nigerian Bar Association and foreign bodies.
It also threatened to intensify acts of civil disobedience if the INEC chairman does not step down from his position.
