The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has announced the death of its Bishop, Peter Chukwu, who passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026, at the age of 60.
The announcement was made in an official statement dated April 11, 2026, and signed by the Vicar General, Donatus Oluwa Chukwu.
In the statement, the diocese expressed deep sorrow over the loss while committing the late bishop’s soul to God’s mercy.
According to the release, Bishop Chukwu, who served as the spiritual leader of the diocese, was born on November 5, 1965.
He was ordained into the priesthood on July 3, 1993, dedicating several decades to pastoral ministry and the advancement of the Catholic faith.
His episcopal journey reached a defining moment when he was consecrated and installed as the third Bishop of the diocese on August 19, 2021.
Throughout his time in office, Bishop Chukwu was widely recognised for his dedication to evangelisation, his commitment to pastoral care, and his efforts in strengthening the faith community within and beyond the diocese.
The church noted that his leadership made a lasting impact on both clergy members and the lay faithful.
The diocese has urged priests, religious members, and the laity to keep the late bishop in their prayers and to support the diocesan community during this period of mourning.
It also stated that funeral arrangements would be announced in due course.
Following the announcement, tributes have continued to pour in, especially on social media, where many described Bishop Chukwu as a devoted servant of God who remained committed to his calling until his passing.
Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, in a statement, described the late cleric as a revered spiritual leader whose life reflected humility, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion to God and humanity.
“I am compelled to assert that his transition marks the end of an era of profound spiritual guidance, moral clarity, and fatherly leadership in Ebonyi State and beyond,” Nwifuru said.
An indigene of Ededeagu Umuezeokohu in Ezza North Local Government Area, Bishop Chukwu was remembered as a symbol of faith, a promoter of peace, and a consistent advocate for justice, unity, and love.
