The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of a commanding officer and six other soldiers of the Joint Task Force (North East) under Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) following a terrorist attack in Monguno, Borno State.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Sani Uba, the incident occurred late on April 12, 2026, when troops of Sector 3 came under an isolated attack by insurgents at the Charlie 13 location.
The military said troops engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, successfully repelling the assault and forcing the terrorists to retreat while maintaining control of the area.
However, tragedy struck shortly after the encounter. The commanding officer, who had advanced to the frontline to assess the situation, was killed alongside six soldiers when their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED).
“Regrettably, the Commanding Officer, while courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the statement said.
The military described the officer’s actions as a demonstration of exemplary leadership and bravery, noting that his decision to move toward the frontline reflected courage, selfless service, and commitment to his troops.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.
“Operation HADIN KAI deeply mourns the loss of this exceptional officer and the other brave personnel who paid the supreme price in service to the nation.
“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement added.
Despite the loss, the military assured that troops remain firmly in control of the location, with operations continuing to secure the area and prevent further attacks.
What you should know
The incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by Nigerian troops in the fight against insurgency in the North-East.
While the military successfully repelled the attack, the loss of personnel underscores the continued threat posed by improvised explosive devices and guerrilla tactics used by insurgents.
Operation HADIN KAI remains central to Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, with troops maintaining pressure on terrorist groups despite such setbacks.
The event also reflects the dangers of frontline leadership, where commanders often face the same risks as their soldiers in active combat zones.
