Ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections, former Minority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Maria Ude Nwachi, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Ebonyi South Senatorial District election.

Nwachi secured the party’s ticket following the PDP direct primary election held in Afikpo, Ebonyi State.

Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki after the exercise, the former lawmaker expressed gratitude to delegates and party members for their support, while declaring confidence that the PDP would perform strongly in the forthcoming elections.

“I thank all the delegates for the enormous love and support shown me at the primary election. This is just the start,” she said.

Nwachi stated that her return to active politics was motivated by a desire to improve the lives of the people and reduce hardship across communities in the state.

“All that I will tell you is that God has remembered us through my being in this race. As you see me here right now, I do not have much need of my own.

“All I need is to eliminate, or at least drastically reduce, the burdens on my people and beyond,” she added.

The PDP senatorial candidate noted that her years in public service had always focused on helping people and improving livelihoods.

“My people of Afikpo can confirm that all my years in and out of politics have been about lifting people out of poverty and suffering,” she said.

She disclosed that she initially had no plans of returning to politics but believed her emergence was divinely arranged.

“I never planned to contest or even return to politics, but God has now ordained it.

“That is why I am in the race. He perfected it through Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, whom God used to avail me of this noble platform, and I am eternally grateful to him,” she stated.

Nwachi also praised PDP governorship aspirant, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks, describing him as a leader capable of transforming Ebonyi State.

“Ebonyians should support him because he has all it takes to make Ebonyi State the fastest-rising state in the federation. The well-travelled, avant-garde, pragmatic, compassionate and ultra-successful business mogul will put an end to multidimensional poverty bedevilling Ebonyi State and Ebonyians,” she said.

According to her, Odii has already contributed significantly to the welfare of residents through housing and empowerment initiatives.

“Odii built over 300 modern homes and gifted them to the have-nots in Ebonyi. He has greatly impacted many lives in Ebonyi and beyond. With our collective hard work, Odii will succeed in 2027,” she added.

Nwachi further promised to focus on empowerment, development, and effective representation if elected to the Senate in 2027.

She assured residents of Ebonyi South Senatorial District that her administration would prioritise projects and policies aimed at improving living standards and driving development across the region.

What You Should Know

Maria Ude Nwachi is a former Minority Leader of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly and has remained a known figure in Ebonyi politics for years.

Her emergence as the PDP senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The contest is expected to attract significant attention because of the PDP’s efforts to reclaim political influence in Ebonyi State after losing ground to the ruling APC in recent years.

Nwachi’s endorsement of PDP governorship aspirant Ifeanyi Odii also highlights ongoing alliance-building within the party ahead of the governorship and National Assembly elections in the state.
