Nollywood actor Yul Edochie has issued a provocative “call to arms” for men navigating turbulent relationships.
Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, the actor-turned-preacher delivered a blunt directive: leave any woman who fails to show absolute respect.
Edochie, who has become a lightning rod for marital discourse over the last two years, framed respect not as a mutual goal but as a male “entitlement.”
In a post that quickly went viral, Edochie urged his male followers to stop “tolerating nonsense” under the guise of commitment. His rhetoric left little room for nuance or reconciliation.
“Men, stop tolerating nonsense in the name of marriage or relationship,” Edochie wrote. “If your wife or girlfriend doesn’t respect you, dump her immediately and get someone who respects you. Your respect as a man is non-negotiable.”
The actor’s stance shifts the traditional narrative of “working through” marital friction, instead advocating for an immediate exit strategy. For Edochie, the solution to a perceived lack of deference is simple: replacement.
While the post was presented as general advice, industry insiders and fans alike view the comments through the lens of Edochie’s own highly publicized—and increasingly acrimonious—marital breakdown.
The actor’s personal life has been under a microscope since April 2022, when he blindsided the public (and reportedly his family) by announcing actress Judy Austin as his second wife and the mother of his newborn son. This revelation shattered his long-standing image as a devoted husband to his first wife, May Edochie.
In April 2022, Yul announces Judy Austin as his second wife; public backlash ensues. In 2023, May Edochie officially filed for divorce, citing adultery and bigamy, and demanded N100 million in damages from Judy Austin.
Edochie’s latest comments appear to be a direct volley in a continuing proxy war of words. Currently, he remains embroiled in a messy legal battle with May, who has accused him of bigamy, a serious allegation under Nigerian civil marriage laws.
Critics argue that Edochie’s definition of “disrespect” may simply be a reaction to May’s refusal to accept a polygamous arrangement. Conversely, his supporters claim he is merely asserting his traditional rights as a husband.
As the N100 million lawsuit looms and the divorce proceedings continue to crawl through the courts, Edochie seems less interested in legal platitudes and more focused on reshaping his public persona into that of a “tough-love” relationship guru.
Whether this latest outburst helps his case or further alienates a divided fan base remains to be seen.
One thing is certain: in the court of public opinion, the jury is still very much out on Yul Edochie.
