Donald Trump has dismissed Pam Bondi from her role as Attorney General, following months of tension within his administration, and has appointed his former personal lawyer, Todd Blanche, as the interim head of the Justice Department.

The decision, announced via social media, comes amid mounting criticism surrounding Bondi’s handling of sensitive legal matters, particularly files linked to Jeffrey Epstein, as well as her inability to secure prosecutions against several individuals perceived as political opponents of the president.

In his statement, Trump praised Bondi’s service, describing her as “a Great American Patriot and a loyal friend,” while noting that she would be transitioning into a new role in the private sector. He also commended Blanche as “a very talented and respected Legal Mind,” expressing confidence in his ability to lead the Justice Department on an interim basis.

Bondi, long regarded as a close ally of Trump, faced growing dissatisfaction from some of his supporters, particularly over the handling and release of Epstein-related documents. The controversy has remained politically sensitive, partly due to Trump’s past association with the late financier, who died in custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Reports also indicate that Bondi’s efforts to pursue legal action against figures such as James Comey and Letitia James fell short of expectations, further straining her standing within the administration.

According to The New York Times, Trump is considering Lee Zeldin, currently heading the Environmental Protection Agency, as a potential permanent replacement.

Reacting to her dismissal, Bondi described her tenure as Attorney General as “the honor of a lifetime,” pledging continued support for Trump in her next role. She also confirmed plans to assist in ensuring a smooth transition of leadership to Blanche.

The move has drawn sharp reactions from Democratic lawmakers. Elizabeth Warren openly welcomed the decision, stating “Good riddance,” while criticizing Bondi’s tenure as being marked by alleged corruption and obstruction, particularly regarding Epstein-related disclosures.

Similarly, Dick Durbin argued that Bondi’s legacy would be defined by what he described as the politicization of the Justice Department in favor of Trump’s personal interests.

Bondi’s political career has been closely tied to Trump, including her role in his first impeachment defense and her public support of his claims surrounding the 2020 presidential election. Prior to her time in Washington, she served as Florida’s Attorney General, becoming the first woman elected to the position in 2010 and winning reelection in 2014.

What you should know

Pam Bondi’s removal highlights ongoing tensions within Donald Trump’s administration, particularly regarding legal controversies tied to high-profile cases like Jeffrey Epstein.

Her replacement, Todd Blanche, signals Trump’s continued reliance on trusted legal allies. The decision also underscores broader political divisions, with Democrats sharply criticizing Bondi’s tenure while Trump maintains she served effectively.

The potential nomination of Lee Zeldin suggests further changes could follow. Overall, the development reflects the high-stakes intersection of law, politics, and loyalty within the current U.S. administration.
