Renewed violence has erupted in Plateau State, barely a day after Bola Tinubu visited the state capital, Jos, to reassure residents of improved security following recent unrest.

In the early hours of Friday, suspected attackers believed to have come from the Rankum (Mahanga) area reportedly stormed Jol community in Riyom Local Government Area, killing a 51-year-old resident identified as Dalyop Betobeje.

The incident, which occurred around 6:56 a.m., has been described by community leaders as a direct challenge to ongoing peace efforts in the region.

This latest assault follows another deadly attack in Bassa Local Government Area. According to the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), armed men suspected to be herdsmen invaded Ban village in Heipang District on Wednesday night, killing a secondary school student, Gloria Godwin, injuring several others, and destroying property.

Security operatives have confirmed the incidents and say investigations are underway, with efforts being intensified to identify and apprehend those responsible.

In a strongly worded statement, the BYM condemned the killings, describing them as “a brutal and senseless act” that highlights the persistent insecurity in Plateau communities. The group expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a quick recovery.

Chairman of BYM Heipang District, Jacob Pam Chall, acknowledged the prompt response of security agencies but emphasized the need for sustained action. He called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the perpetrators, stressing that communities deserve safety and justice.

The association also appealed to residents to remain calm while encouraging stronger collaboration between locals and security forces to prevent further attacks.

During his visit on Wednesday, President Tinubu had assured victims and residents of the Federal Government’s commitment to ending the cycle of violence, stating, “I promise you this experience will not repeat itself.”

However, the resurgence of attacks in Riyom and Bassa has cast doubt over those assurances, underscoring the fragile security situation in the state.

In recent months, Plateau has witnessed a worrying increase in violence, particularly in rural areas, raising concerns among residents and putting pressure on authorities to implement more effective and lasting security measures.

What you should know

Plateau State continues to face recurring violent attacks despite federal assurances of improved security.

The recent killings in Riyom and Bassa, coming shortly after President Tinubu’s visit, highlight the fragile peace in the region. Local groups are demanding stronger action, including thorough investigations and justice for victims.

The situation underscores the urgent need for sustained security strategies, better intelligence, and community cooperation to prevent further bloodshed and restore lasting peace in affected areas.
