The Labour Party has officially informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of its planned schedule for the 2026 elective congresses and national convention, with April 28 set for a crucial gathering in Umuahia, Abia State.
This development was confirmed in a statement released in Abuja by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the party’s Interim National Chairman.
In a letter dated March 31, 2026, addressed to INEC, the party outlined a detailed timetable covering ward, local government, and state congresses, which will culminate in the national convention where new national executives are expected to emerge.
The notification emphasized that the process aligns with the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), INEC regulations, and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), all of which require political parties to formally inform the commission about their internal electoral activities.
According to the schedule, ward congresses will take place nationwide on April 23, followed by local government congresses on April 24 and state congresses on April 25 across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Each stage of the exercise is expected to begin at 12 noon.
The party also confirmed that its national convention will be held at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, where delegates will elect new members of the party’s national executive.
This move signals a significant step in reorganizing the party’s internal structure ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers believe the outcome of these congresses could influence the balance of power within the party and shape its future direction.
The announcement follows a recent postponement of the earlier schedule, which had initially been set to begin on March 26, 2026. The delay was intended to allow broader participation, particularly to complete the party’s ongoing digital membership registration process.
