The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, has expressed profound grief over a deadly attack by suspected terrorists on a mining camp in Kuru District of Jos South Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of several innocent lives.

The governor spoke on Thursday after gunmen stormed a mining site in the Kuru community on Wednesday night, killing seven people in the process.

In a statement released on Thursday by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang conveyed his deep condolences to the families of the victims and described the incident as barbaric, senseless and deeply unfortunate, particularly at a time when his administration has intensified efforts to restore enduring peace across Plateau State.

“The Governor strongly condemned the recent coordinated attacks in Kuru, Gyel and Buhum communities in Chugwi Village of Vwang District, reaffirming his administration’s firm commitment to safeguarding lives and property in every part of Plateau State. He lamented the tragic loss of innocent lives, stressing that such acts of terror will not deter the government’s resolve to decisively confront banditry, terrorism and all forms of criminality.

“Governor Mutfwang commended the resilience and dedication of the security agencies in the state and charged them to intensify intelligence-led operations to ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the heinous crimes in the affected communities,” the statement read.

The governor further instructed security agencies to deepen collaboration with local communities to proactively identify and neutralise emerging security threats, while reaffirming the government’s solidarity with families affected by violent attacks across the state.

He also called on personnel of Operation Rainbow to strengthen intelligence gathering and early-warning systems to facilitate timely and effective responses to security challenges.

Governor Mutfwang reassured residents of Plateau State of his unwavering commitment to their safety, welfare and overall well-being, stressing that his administration will not relent in its determination to secure every part of the state.

What you should know
Plateau State has faced recurring security challenges linked to banditry, communal violence and attacks on rural communities, particularly in mining and farming areas.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration has placed security at the centre of its agenda, working closely with federal security agencies and local structures to stem violence. The attack on the Kuru mining camp underscores the vulnerability of remote economic sites and the broader struggle to secure livelihoods in conflict-prone areas.

Authorities say improved intelligence sharing, community engagement and early-warning mechanisms are critical to preventing future attacks and restoring lasting peace across the state.
