U.S. Halts All Immigrant Visa Processing Worldwide

The State Department has paused all immigrant visa applications at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, the latest in a string of measures by the Trump administration aimed at restricting immigration into the country.

Applicants who had interviews scheduled were informed by email that their appointments are postponed, with a promise of notification later about new dates and times.

A State Department spokesperson framed the move as administrative rather than punitive, telling the Financial Times it was needed to conduct “in-depth training” for consular officers. Officials described it internally as part of a “global training initiative” for consular officers.

The stated rationale ties back to a long-running administration push to screen out applicants deemed likely to become dependent on US government assistance.

The administration wants to ensure that people applying for immigrant visas are unlikely to become a “public charge” or rely on public benefits intended for eligible Americans, according to the Financial Times report.

The State Department has not given a date for when normal appointment schedules will resume, saying only that visa services would be adjusted while officers complete the training.

This is not the administration’s first attempt at this kind of restriction.

In January, the State Department had already moved to pause immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries deemed at high risk of relying on public benefits, with State Department social media posts saying the freeze would remain until officials could ensure new immigrants would not “extract wealth from the American people.”

That country-specific ban was struck down by a federal judge last week, and this newer, worldwide pause arrived just days later.

The visa freeze also lands alongside a flurry of other immigration actions. On August 10, the State Department announced it had revoked more than 175,000 visas since Trump began his second term in January 2025.

Separately, the Department of Homeland Security this week proposed a $103,265 fee for H-1B cap-subject petitions, its second attempt at a steep H-1B fee after courts struck down an earlier $100,000 proposal.

The administration has also moved to strip visas from certain asylum seekers, with spokesman Tommy Pigott arguing that people who initially entered the US for tourism or business and later applied for asylum committed fraud, grounds for visa revocation.

The White House has said as many as 200,000 visas could ultimately be affected by that push, calling it the largest mass visa revocation in US history, though the State Department has not confirmed that figure.

Immigration lawyers say the abrupt pause is landing hardest on people who had already committed time and money to the process.

Brian Simmons, an attorney at the immigration firm Fragomen in Washington, told the Financial Times that many affected applicants had spent thousands of dollars and upended their lives to make scheduled interviews, only to see those appointments cancelled at the last minute.

It comes against the backdrop of an aggressive deportation campaign, with ICE agents carrying out raids across the country and the administration moving to largely end the US refugee resettlement program.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Trump administration has frozen all immigrant visa processing worldwide officially for consular officer “training,” but it is tied to a broader push to screen out applicants likely to rely on public benefits.

It follows a court striking down a similar 75-country ban days earlier and fits a wider pattern of 175,000+ visa revocations, steep new H-1B fees, and asylum-visa crackdowns.

No resumption date has been given, leaving thousands of applicants, many already out thousands of dollars, in limbo indefinitely.
