Nigerian gospel singer Neon Adejo has stepped forward with a detailed account of how he became entangled in the very public and increasingly messy fallout between celebrity photographer David Martins and his estranged wife, Alicia, addressing allegations that his involvement went beyond friendly concern.
According to the singer’s own narration, the episode began at a conference earlier this year, where Alicia approached him after the event. What started as small talk about her son quickly turned serious when she asked for a private moment and broke down in tears near his car.
There, Adejo says, she recounted three years of alleged mental, financial, verbal, and emotional abuse at the hands of her husband, a claim that stunned him given how starkly it contrasted with the couple’s carefully curated image on social media.
Adejo further claims Alicia showed him photographs on her phone that she said documented the abuse images she had reportedly never shared publicly and which he described as considerably more disturbing than anything posted online.
He says she also told him she had been forced to lodge with a neighbour in her compound, struggling as a nursing mother to care for both herself and her child.
Moved by her account, Adejo says he offered financial help on the spot, sending money earmarked for the baby’s needs, with any surplus left for Alicia’s personal upkeep.
That initial act of assistance has since mushroomed into a full-blown public scandal. The dispute widened after David publicly released screenshots he alleged showed inappropriate exchanges between Alicia and Neon, presenting them as evidence of infidelity, a claim Adejo has firmly denied.
In addressing David directly, the singer said he would not condone violence within the marriage while insisting he had no wish to be drawn into the couple’s conflict.
Beyond the initial financial support, Adejo has said he also covered hospital bills, provided food, and helped secure accommodation for Alicia and her son, framing his involvement as an act of conscience rather than romantic interest.
He has described the fallout as a painful lesson about the risks of inserting himself into another couple’s marital affairs.
David Martins, for his part, has rejected the abuser label entirely. He has countered that it was in fact Alicia who was abusive throughout the marriage, and has pointed to what he describes as supporting evidence, including her disclosed anxiety and depression diagnosis from early in their relationship.
He has also accused Adejo of encouraging Alicia to take her story to blogs, of circulating his photograph in a group chat, and of inciting people against him allegations Adejo has pushed back on.
The scandal deepened further when private WhatsApp messages purportedly exchanged between Adejo and Alicia leaked online, fuelling speculation about the nature of their relationship.
Adejo addressed the leak directly, explaining that a request for a selfie was tied only to arranging a hairstylist for Alicia at his own expense, saying she looked like someone who had been through a difficult time and that he wanted her to feel like herself again.
The controversy has since drawn in other public figures. Big Brother Naija star Ike Onyema publicly criticized Adejo, without naming him directly, accusing him of overstepping boundaries by allegedly covering Alicia’s Airbnb costs and later requesting photos from her.
As it stands, the saga remains an unresolved back-and-forth of competing narratives, abuse allegations, counter-allegations, leaked chats, and public statements with no independent verification of either party’s claims, leaving followers of the story to sift through accusation and denial in real time.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
What began as Neon Adejo stepping in to help a woman he believed was suffering abuse has spiraled into a tangled public dispute with Alicia and David Martins now trading accusations of abuse and infidelity, Adejo caught in the middle over leaked messages, and other public figures weighing in.
None of the core claims the alleged abuse, the alleged affair, or Adejo’s true motives have been independently verified. The one clear fact is that a private marital breakdown has become a highly public spectacle, and everything beyond that is still “he said, she said.”
