The Abia State Government has suspended the Clerk of the State House of Assembly, John Pedro Irokansi, over allegations of misconduct.
The suspension was communicated in a letter dated May 29, 2026, and signed by the state Head of Service, Benson Ojeikere.
Following the decision, the government appointed Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department of the Abia State House of Assembly, as Acting Clerk with immediate effect.
Although the government did not disclose the specific allegations against Irokansi, it stated that the appointment of the Acting Clerk would remain in place while investigations into the matter continue.
The directive instructed Onwukwe to take full responsibility for the administration of the Clerk’s office until the investigation is concluded or further directives are issued by the appropriate authorities.
He was also directed to ensure the proper protection of all government assets, official records and documents handed over to him in accordance with existing regulations.
Irokansi is a veteran civil servant who has served as Clerk of the Abia State House of Assembly for about 16 years.
During his tenure, he worked under three different administrations in the state.
