Residents of communities in Plateau State have been plunged into mourning following coordinated attacks that left at least six people dead and several others injured.
The incidents occurred in Shonun community of Riyom Local Government Area and Hurum in Gashish District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, further heightening concerns over persistent insecurity in the region.
According to Tengong Rwang, Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, the attacks took place on the same night but at different locations. He said the assailants reportedly arrived on foot and were armed with sophisticated weapons.
Rwang disclosed that four people were killed in Hurum, while five others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment. In Shonun, two persons were confirmed dead, with three others hospitalised.
He alleged that residents of Shonun had earlier raised concerns over the movement of unknown herders into the area, which was reported to security agencies without any apparent response.
“The people of Shonun had earlier informed security operatives about strange movements into the community, but nothing seemed to have been done,” he said.
Rwang further claimed that in the days leading up to the attacks, unfamiliar individuals were transported into nearby settlements in trucks, prompting residents to relocate women and children for safety.

He described the affected communities as long-suffering, noting that repeated attacks over the years have forced many residents to flee their homes in search of safer locations.
“These are communities that have suffered repeated attacks. Most people have abandoned their homes for fear of being killed,” he added.
Local vigilantes reportedly attempted to resist the attackers but were overpowered due to the superior firepower of the assailants, resulting in the casualties recorded.
Rwang also criticised what he described as the inadequate response from security agencies, despite the presence of security units in the area.
“We are still calling on the government to act swiftly and rid our communities of these attackers,” he said.
When contacted, the Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Alfred Alabo, said he had not yet received a formal briefing on the incidents but assured that updates would be provided after gathering details from officers in the affected locations.
The latest violence adds to a growing pattern of attacks in Plateau State, raising renewed concerns about the safety of rural communities and the need for more effective security measures.
What you should know
The recent attacks in Plateau State highlight ongoing security challenges affecting rural communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
Repeated incidents of violence have led to loss of lives, displacement, and growing fear among residents. Despite reports of prior warnings, communities claim responses from security agencies remain inadequate.
The situation underscores the need for improved intelligence, rapid response, and stronger protection for vulnerable areas.
As insecurity persists, the pressure on government and security forces to deliver lasting solutions continues to increase, especially in regions with a history of recurring communal and armed conflicts.
