Leaders and stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun East Senatorial District have endorsed Governor Dapo Abiodun as their consensus candidate for the 2027 senatorial election.
The endorsement was announced during a well-attended gathering held at Adeola Odutola Hall in Ijebu-Ode, where party leaders and grassroots representatives from across the district converged.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Lekan Adeniran, the meeting brought together members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, former and current local government chairmen, past and serving lawmakers at both state and national levels, councillors from all wards, as well as women and youth leaders.
The statement noted that attendees included councillors across the senatorial district, ward executives, local government leaders, serving members of the National Assembly and State House of Assembly, former legislators, and members of the Elders Advisory Council.
Speaking at the event, former Ogun East senator Lekan Mustapha said the endorsement was based on a shared belief in Abiodun’s ability to effectively represent the district at the Senate.
“Party leaders would formally communicate the endorsement to the governor, including a commitment to purchase his nomination forms for the 2027 election.
“We will put a body together to deliver this message to our Governor that he has been adopted as the consensus candidate,” he said.

Mustapha described Abiodun as a leader with strong character and sound intellect, deserving of widespread support for the Senate seat.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the State Government, Tokunbo Talabi, said the governor’s performance in governance and ability to unify the party made him a suitable choice.
“This endorsement is historic and unanimous. It reflects the collective belief that Prince Dapo Abiodun is the right person for the position,” Talabi stated.
A member of the House of Representatives, Femi Ogunbanwo, representing Odogbolu, Ijebu-Ode, and Ijebu North East Federal Constituency, also praised the governor’s administration, noting its contributions to peace and development in the state.
Similarly, Sagamu Local Government Chairman, Afolabi Odulate, commended Abiodun’s leadership and urged him to accept the senatorial nomination.
The event reportedly drew participation from all 103 councillors across the nine local governments in Ogun East, alongside youth leaders and grassroots mobilisers.
Other prominent figures present included Gbenga Kaka, Ogun East APC Chairman Adedoyin Adeleke, and party elders such as Kola Ogunjobi, Bayo Dayo, Durojaye, Pegba Otemolu, James Dina, and Osibote Amoran.
What you should know
The endorsement of Dapo Abiodun as the APC consensus candidate for Ogun East signals early political alignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
Such endorsements often aim to prevent internal party conflicts by promoting unity around a single candidate. Abiodun’s track record as governor and his influence within the party appear to have strengthened his position.
However, consensus arrangements can sometimes face opposition from other aspirants, making internal party dynamics a key factor to watch.
The move also reflects the strategic importance of Ogun East in regional and national political calculations.
