President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sanctioned a modest reshuffle within the Federal Executive Council, introducing changes that affect key positions in his cabinet.

Details contained in a memo issued by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, revealed that two ministers, Wale Edun and Ahmed Dangiwa, will exit their current roles, with new appointments already announced to fill the vacancies.

Wale Edun, who previously served as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, has been instructed to transfer responsibilities to Taiwo Oyedele. Oyedele, who earlier held the position of Minister of State within the same ministry, will now assume full leadership as Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.

In a related development, Muttaqha Rabe Darma has been nominated and designated as the incoming Minister for Housing and Urban Development. Ahmed Dangiwa, who previously oversaw the ministry, has been directed to hand over duties to the Minister of State pending further arrangements.

The directive outlined that all transition processes, including handing over and assumption of duties, must be finalised on or before the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026.

Providing insight into the rationale behind the changes, Akume explained that the reshuffle was intended to enhance coordination within government operations and improve policy execution.

“These changes are aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

He further clarified that the president exercised constitutional authority in making the adjustments, referencing Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

The president expressed appreciation to the outgoing ministers for their contributions to national service and extended his best wishes for their future endeavours. He also reassured serving cabinet members that efforts to revitalise governance structures would remain ongoing.

What you should know

The cabinet reshuffle approved by President Bola Tinubu signals a strategic adjustment aimed at improving governance efficiency, particularly in economic management.

The replacement of Wale Edun with Taiwo Oyedele suggests a shift toward strengthening fiscal coordination and policy execution under the Renewed Hope Agenda. Changes in the Housing Ministry also reflect ongoing efforts to restructure key sectors.

While described as minor, the reshuffle indicates that the administration is actively reassessing performance and realigning its team to meet national expectations.

Continuous cabinet adjustments may become a recurring strategy as the government seeks improved results.
