The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.

The decision was reached during the maiden national convention of the party, where delegates adopted the motion as part of resolutions aimed at shaping the party’s leadership structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The motion was moved by Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmaker representing Ogbaru Constituency of Anambra State in the 10th National Assembly.

Delegates at the convention overwhelmingly adopted the proposal.

As part of the resolution, the party also agreed that after the completion of the single four-year southern tenure, the presidential ticket would automatically be zoned to Northern Nigeria.

NDC zones presidency to South

The zoning arrangement is expected to shape political calculations within the party and has effectively opened the door for southern aspirants to formally seek the party’s presidential ticket.

The development is seen as a major boost for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who is widely regarded as one of the leading southern figures expected to contest under the platform.

The decision also positions other eligible southern aspirants to purchase the party’s nomination forms and participate in the race.

The zoning resolution is likely to trigger fresh political realignments as aspirants begin consultations and strategic engagements within the party structure ahead of the primaries.

What You Should Know

The zoning of the NDC presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single term is a strategic political move designed to balance regional interests and strengthen internal party unity.

It significantly improves the chances of southern contenders, particularly Peter Obi, while assuring northern stakeholders of an automatic return of the ticket after one term.

Such rotational arrangements have historically influenced political stability and alliance-building within Nigerian parties, and this decision could reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
