The governorship ambition of Obafemi Hamzat has received a major boost following endorsements from key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.
The growing support comes as the All Progressives Congress intensifies internal consultations over his running mate and preparations for the party’s primary election.
Hamzat’s candidacy had earlier gained backing from Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC’s Governance Advisory Council, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and former aspirant Olajide Adediran, who stepped down from the race in support of the deputy governor.
The latest endorsement was reinforced during the 2026 Workers’ Day event held at Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Speaking at the event, Lagos NLC Chairperson, Funmi Sessi, described Hamzat as a dependable and capable leader.
“Hamzat is loyal, competent, tested and trusted. His victory will ensure continued developmental strides achieved by successive administrations in the state, particularly, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” she said.
Representing Governor Sanwo-Olu at the occasion, Hamzat thanked supporters for their confidence and assured Lagos residents of continuity in governance.

“We will not let you down. The developmental trajectory will be improved upon in Lagos. Nobody is ready because the assignment is audacious. But what you have is experience. Having served as Deputy Governor of Lagos under Governor Sanwo-Olu, I’ve learned a lot. I know the room. I know where the kitchen is,” he said.
In another significant development, Hamzat has reportedly been cleared by the APC Governorship Screening Committee in Abuja to participate in the party’s governorship primary.
Reacting after the screening, he explained that the process focused on verifying submitted credentials and professional records.
“The screening was designed to verify the credentials, records, and experiences submitted by aspirants seeking to fly the APC flag,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the APC is reportedly facing internal disagreements over who should emerge as Hamzat’s running mate.
Party leaders had initially considered Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin for the deputy governorship slot, but the choice reportedly faced resistance from stakeholders in the Badagry division.
The opposition camp is also making moves ahead of the election.
A concerned APC group in Oshodi-Isolo has raised concerns over alleged attempts by former Rauf Aregbesola to sponsor a House of Representatives candidate in the constituency despite his current alignment outside the ruling party.
The unfolding political developments suggest that Lagos’ 2027 governorship contest is already taking shape, with Hamzat emerging as a strong frontrunner.

Hamzat’s growing endorsements from labour unions and influential APC stakeholders significantly strengthen his position ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship race.
In Lagos politics, backing from organised labour and APC power blocs often shapes primary outcomes. However, unresolved disagreements over his running mate could become a critical internal challenge.
The situation reflects the strategic balancing of Lagos’ political divisions, especially across key zones like Badagry, as the APC seeks to maintain dominance in one of Nigeria’s most politically important states.
