Governor Hints at Resignation

Hope Uzodimma has formally picked up and undergone screening for the All Progressives Congress Senate ticket for Imo West Senatorial District, a move that has intensified political speculation over his future and possible plans beyond the Imo State Government House.

The development has sparked fresh conversations within political circles over whether the governor may resign from office before the expiration of his second tenure in January 2028 if elected into the Senate.

The move has also triggered new permutations within the APC over the 2027 race for the office of Senate President, with party insiders alleging that Uzodimma’s senatorial ambition may be linked to a broader strategy to succeed Godswill Akpabio as leader of the Red Chamber.

Sources familiar with internal party discussions claimed that Uzodimma’s camp is weighing the option of resignation should he secure victory in the Senate election and subsequently emerge Senate President at the inauguration of the next National Assembly.

However, the same sources alleged that if the Senate Presidency bid fails, the governor may abandon the Senate seat and return to complete his tenure as governor of Imo State.

The unfolding political calculations are believed to be among the reasons behind the now-aborted amendment of Senate rules that sought to bar senators-elect who were not members of the current 10th Senate from contesting for principal leadership positions in 2027.

The controversial proposal had generated widespread criticism before it was eventually dropped following resistance from within the APC and other political stakeholders.

Many observers interpreted the failed amendment as an attempt to block influential governors and former governors considered potential contenders for Senate leadership.

Confirming his senatorial ambition, Uzodimma disclosed in a statement posted on his official X handle on Sunday that he had accepted calls from constituents to seek representation at the National Assembly.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma

“My dear people of Imo West Senatorial District have once again called upon me to serve, and I have accepted this noble call with utmost humility, sincerity of purpose, and unwavering commitment to the collective advancement of our people,” he wrote.

The governor said he had presented himself before the APC leadership and the screening committee for the National Assembly primary election.

“During the engagement, I reaffirmed that the Senatorial seat I seek to occupy belongs first and foremost to our great party, while I remain only a loyal and dedicated candidate entrusted with the responsibility of projecting and advancing the ideals, vision, and aspirations of the APC to the very best of my ability,” he stated.

Uzodimma added that his decision to contest was inspired by the need to support the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu through what he described as quality representation, effective legislation, and sustainable development.

Notably, the governor did not address whether he would resign before the completion of his tenure if elected senator.

His silence on the matter has continued to fuel debate, especially as political observers predict that the battle for Senate Presidency in 2027 could become one of the fiercest internal contests within the APC since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

What You Should Know

Hope Uzodimma’s decision to seek a Senate seat is politically significant because it opens up questions about succession in Imo State and power dynamics within the APC ahead of 2027.

If elected and he chooses to pursue the Senate Presidency, he could become a major contender in the leadership battle of the 11th Senate.

However, any move requiring resignation before the end of his governorship would trigger constitutional and political implications in Imo State.

The development also reflects growing strategic positioning among top APC figures ahead of the next electoral cycle.
