The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, has regained control of the union’s National Secretariat in Abuja following a forceful takeover by a rival faction led by Baruwa.

Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo, visited the secretariat on Tuesday to inspect the level of damage after the facility was recovered.

A video circulating online showed him assessing affected areas within the premises.

After the inspection, he held a meeting with executive members from Kaduna State, while security personnel and supporters maintained a strong presence at the secretariat to ensure stability.

In a statement shared via his Instagram page, Akinsanya described the incident as a “forceful takeover,” stressing that legal processes regarding the leadership dispute are still ongoing.

He clarified that he was not a defendant in the judgement being referenced by the Baruwa-led faction, adding that the ruling has already been appealed and a stay of execution obtained.

“The National President wishes to inform members of the union and the general public that he was not a defendant in the purported judgement.

“The judgement has been appealed, and a stay of execution has been duly entered. He has not engaged with Mr Baruwa or any individual, aware that cases are pending in court.

“The situation is under the control of security agencies. Alhaji Musiliu Ayinde Akinsanya remains the National President of NURTW,” the statement read.

Despite the tension surrounding the leadership tussle, Akinsanya urged union members to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding as the dispute continues.

What you should know

The struggle for control of the NURTW highlights ongoing leadership disputes within influential unions in Nigeria.

With legal battles still unresolved, both factions are relying on court decisions and enforcement actions to assert authority.

The involvement of security agencies underscores the sensitivity of the situation, as the union plays a significant role in transportation and grassroots mobilization across the country.
