A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna State has adjourned proceedings on the bail application of former governor Nasir El-Rufai to March 31, 2026.

The decision followed Tuesday’s hearing, where both the prosecution and defence presented arguments regarding the bail request.

During the session, El-Rufai’s counsel, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail, citing his client’s constitutional rights and the need for adequate time to prepare his defence.

However, the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that the charges against the former governor are serious and that granting bail could potentially interfere with ongoing investigations.

El-Rufai was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission over allegations bordering on corruption and abuse of office during his tenure.

According to the Commission, the charges include financial misconduct, conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.

Ahead of the arraignment, security was significantly reinforced across Kaduna, particularly around the court premises, with armed personnel stationed at strategic points to maintain order as supporters and observers gathered.

Despite the high-profile nature of the case, journalists were denied access to the courtroom during proceedings.

The former governor was arraigned alongside Joel Adoga under suit number FHC/KD/73/2026, as disclosed in a statement by the Commission’s Head of Media and Public Communications, John Okor Odey.

In a related development, the Commission has also filed a separate case against El-Rufai and Amadu Sule before the Kaduna State High Court. The case, marked KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, includes allegations such as abuse of office, fraud, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

The ICPC confirmed that both cases were instituted on March 18, 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability and tackle corruption.

While the Federal High Court hearing has been adjourned to March 31, the date for proceedings at the State High Court is yet to be fixed.

The Commission also noted that the former governor has been duly served with all charges.

What you should know

The adjournment of Nasir El-Rufai’s bail hearing reflects the complexity and seriousness of the corruption allegations against him.

With multiple cases filed by the ICPC, the legal battle could have far-reaching political and legal implications.

The heightened security and restricted media access highlight the sensitivity of the case, which is likely to remain in public focus as proceedings continue.
