Gunmen suspected to be bandits have reportedly attacked Kogot village in Vwang (Vom) District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two members of the same family.

The attack was said to have occurred at about 11:00 p.m. on Monday, throwing the community into panic as residents fled for safety.

A community member, Jerry Badung, identified the victims as 78-year-old Ngo Shettu Badung and 52-year-old Danjuma Badung.

According to him, the attackers stormed the village under the cover of darkness and opened fire, causing widespread fear among residents.

“People started running when the gunshots began. Residents were terrified because the attack happened late in the night,” he said.

Plateau attack

The incident was also confirmed in a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM), Rwang Tengwong.

The association said the killings came amid rising tension in the area following the arrest and continued detention of eight local guards from Vwang District by security operatives.

It expressed concern over the recurring attacks on communities in the district and called on security agencies to strengthen efforts to protect lives and property.

Efforts to get official reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful, as calls to the spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

What You Should Know

The latest attack in Jos South adds to growing concerns over insecurity in Plateau State, where recurring violence has continued to claim lives despite the presence of security operatives.

Community groups have repeatedly raised alarm over what they describe as inadequate protection and delayed response to distress calls. The killing of two members of the same family in Kogot village highlights the fragile security situation in rural communities.

Residents are calling for urgent intervention by both state and federal authorities to prevent further attacks, restore public confidence, and ensure that those responsible for the violence are identified and brought to justice.
