Oil markets closed out the week on a weaker note on Friday, with both major benchmarks poised to snap a two-week rally even as the underlying geopolitical backdrop remained as combustible as ever.

Brent crude slipped 60 cents, or 0.67%, to $89.10 a barrel by mid-morning European trading, while West Texas Intermediate shed 64 cents, or 0.77%, to $82.89.

The declines cap a rough stretch for crude bulls: Brent is on pace to finish the week down 5.3%, with WTI not far behind at a 4.3% drop, a sharp reversal after prices had climbed for two consecutive weeks on fears that the Israel-Iran conflict could choke off oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

That the market is easing now, rather than tightening further, tells its own story. Analysts at ING pointed to a market quietly adjusting to a “new normal” in the Gulf, with shippers and producers growing bolder about moving crude through the strait despite the ongoing hostilities, even as the diplomatic track shows little sign of a breakthrough.

It’s the kind of pragmatic recalibration traders make when a crisis, however serious, starts to look less like an acute shock and more like a persistent but navigable risk.

The numbers bear that out. Goldman Sachs estimated Thursday that total Gulf exports have settled in a range of 15 million to 16 million barrels per day, still well below the 22-23 million bpd baseline seen before the war broke out, but meaningfully recovered from the trough hit back in March, when flows bottomed out some 5 million to 6 million barrels per day lower. In other words, the market has priced in disruption, but not collapse.

Prices had actually settled higher after the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the Trump administration has told international mediators in no uncertain terms that it has no appetite for reviving the June memorandum of understanding with Tehran, a document that had represented the last real scaffolding for a negotiated de-escalation.

The report complicates an already fragile diplomatic picture, and it followed a blunt acknowledgment from Washington earlier the same day that it is not currently in talks with Iran at all, even as other governments continue quiet efforts to coax the two sides back to the table.

The diplomatic freeze comes on the heels of Monday’s sanctions package, which the administration billed as the toughest measures ever imposed on Iran. Tehran’s response was predictably defiant, dismissing the sanctions as an “inhumane and hostile act” it said had already lost much of their bite after years of similar pressure.

If the Iran picture is one of stalemate, the European theater offered a reminder that the war’s other front lines are just as combustible.

Moscow warned this week that it could strike British military targets both inside and outside Ukraine in retaliation for Kyiv’s use of British-supplied long-range cruise missiles against Russian territory, a threat that lands squarely on a NATO founding member and raises the stakes of an already tense standoff.

For his part, Trump sought to pour cold water on the escalation risk, saying he does not believe Putin would attack a NATO member outright and brushing aside reports that CIA Director John Ratcliffe had personally warned Russian officials against such a move this week.

Taken together, it’s a market caught between two competing signals: a Gulf that traders are growing more confident about navigating and a wider geopolitical map from Tehran to Moscow to London that keeps generating fresh reasons for caution.

For now, adaptation is winning out over alarm, and crude is giving back some of the risk premium it built up over the past fortnight. Whether that holds likely depends on which of this week’s flashpoints the Strait, the stalled Iran talks, or the Russia-NATO friction proves to be the one that doesn’t stay contained.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Oil prices are falling not because tensions have eased, but because markets have adapted to them. Traders and shippers have grown more confident navigating the Strait of Hormuz despite the ongoing conflict, and that adaptation is outweighing the risk premium from stalled U.S.-Iran diplomacy and rising Russia-NATO friction.

Geopolitical risk hasn’t disappeared, but the market’s fear of it has, at least for now, which is why prices are dropping even as the underlying conflicts remain unresolved.
