Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman of Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Ishaq Onu Yunusa, during an attack on the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway.
The incident occurred around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
The spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday.
According to Saliu, the attack happened at about 5:00 p.m. when the gunmen emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists.
Following the attack, police officers found a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH abandoned along the highway.
Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead inside it, while another occupant was reportedly abducted by the attackers and taken into the bush.
The police said its personnel, working with other security agencies, had been deployed to search the surrounding forests and rescue the abducted passenger.
The remains of Yunusa were taken to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy as investigators continued efforts to gather information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, directed security personnel to sustain operations along the affected route.
He also ordered the security agencies to ensure the safety of motorists and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
