FAAN Settles Ride-Hailing Dispute at Nigerian Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that it has resolved its operational disagreement with Bolt, the e-hailing platform, and has given the company the green light to resume pick-up and drop-off services across FAAN-managed airports with immediate effect.

The development brings to an end a standoff whose precise origins FAAN has not fully detailed, though such disputes between airport authorities and ride-hailing operators in Nigeria have historically centered on issues like unregistered or unverified drivers gaining access to airport premises, disagreements over designated pick-up zones, and friction with FAAN’s own airport taxi and car-hire schemes.

Passengers travelling through major hubs such as the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja had, in the interim, been left to rely on airport-approved taxis, private arrangements, or rival platforms to complete their journeys.

In its statement, FAAN did not go into extensive detail about the specific terms reached, but characterised the matter as fully settled, allowing Bolt drivers to return to designated airport zones without further restriction.

The brevity of the announcement suggests the two sides may have reached an operational understanding potentially covering driver verification, designated waiting areas, or compliance with airport access protocols rather than a broader policy shift.

For travellers, the immediate resumption of Bolt services is likely to be welcomed as a return to convenience and competitive pricing at the airport kerb, an area where availability of ride options has become an increasingly visible marker of airport service quality.

For Bolt, regaining a foothold at federally managed airports restores access to one of its more lucrative and high-demand pick-up corridors, particularly given Nigeria’s status as one of the company’s largest markets on the continent.

Neither FAAN nor Bolt has yet released further commentary elaborating on the root cause of the disruption or the specific safeguards agreed upon to prevent a recurrence.

Stakeholders in the aviation and transport sectors will likely be watching to see whether this resolution holds, given FAAN’s history of periodically tightening control over third-party ground transport operators at its facilities, from taxi accreditation drives to past restrictions on “illegal” car-hire operators as part of broader efforts to sanitize the passenger experience at Nigerian airports.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

FAAN and Bolt have resolved their operational dispute, and Bolt drivers can now pick up and drop off passengers at FAAN-managed airports again, effective immediately, restoring a convenient, competitively priced transport option for travelers who had been without it during the suspension.
