Less than 24 hours before the All Progressives Congress (APC) is scheduled to hold its governorship primary election in Taraba State, a leading aspirant and former board member of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Chief David Sabo Kente, has announced his withdrawal from the contest.
Kente made the announcement during a press briefing in Jalingo, explaining that his decision was driven by the need to promote unity and political stability within the party’s state structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stated that his withdrawal followed extensive consultations and persistent appeals from key stakeholders within the party, including the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yiltwada, and other influential leaders in the state.
Addressing speculation surrounding his decision, Kente firmly rejected claims that he was financially induced to step down, stressing that his choice was entirely voluntary and rooted in party loyalty and strategic considerations.
He said, “I also want to make it clear that I was not paid to step aside. In fact no one has the capacity to buy me over.”

He further reaffirmed his commitment to the APC, insisting that his decision should not be interpreted as disengagement from the party or its activities.
“As a party member, I remain deeply loyal to the APC,” he added.
Kente explained that his withdrawal was influenced by sustained appeals from party elders, stakeholders, and respected figures who believed stepping down would help strengthen internal cohesion and improve the party’s chances in future elections.
“I had to yield to the various appeals from leaders of thought and stakeholders who believe this is the best path forward for our party’s success,” he said.
While he did not disclose his immediate political plans, Kente noted that he would communicate his next steps to his supporters in due course.
He also reiterated his support for the re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging his followers to remain steadfast and continue supporting the APC as the 2027 election cycle approaches.

Chief David Sabo Kente’s withdrawal from the Taraba APC governorship primary highlights ongoing internal negotiations and power balancing within the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
His exit, coming just hours before the primary, is seen as part of broader efforts by APC leadership to reduce internal competition and consolidate support around preferred candidates in key states.
While Kente insists his decision was voluntary and not influenced by financial inducement, it underscores the increasing role of party elders and national leadership in shaping candidate outcomes.
The development is expected to influence delegate alignment and strengthen consensus-building efforts within the Taraba APC structure.
