Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said he is prepared to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if a thorough review of his records proves that he is not qualified to lead the country.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate said anyone seeking public office should be properly scrutinised before being elected.
Obi made the statement during an interview with Chude, where he spoke on the importance of transparency and accountability in leadership.
He said he has no objection to Nigerians examining his background, records, and previous actions if it will help voters make informed decisions about those seeking public office.
The former Anambra State governor argued that all politicians should undergo public scrutiny before elections rather than after assuming office.
According to him, Nigerians have often uncovered disturbing information about elected officials only after they had taken office, a situation he believes can be prevented through proper checks before elections.
Obi said he is willing to accept the outcome of any fair investigation into his past.
He added that if such an investigation shows he is not fit to lead Nigeria, he would voluntarily withdraw from the presidential race instead of continuing his campaign.
He said, “Let’s examine everything now. If I’m not qualified to serve this country, I will simply withdraw. I have nothing to hide and would rather withdraw from the race than continue if evidence showed I was unfit to lead. Public officials should be subjected to scrutiny before they are entrusted with leadership responsibilities.”
