Gunmen stormed the home of the traditional ruler of the Ode Oriya community in Owo, Ondo State, on Saturday evening, abducting him and shooting his wife in what witnesses described as a swift and calculated attack.
The victim, identified as Mr. Adeniyi Adelana, 60, the Baale of Ode Oriya Village, was forcefully abducted from his home at approximately 8:05 pm by a group of no fewer than six heavily armed men who exploited the cover of nightfall to carry out their operation with chilling efficiency.
The assailants reportedly moved through a nearby bush path after seizing the community leader, vanishing into the dense forest before residents could mount any meaningful resistance or alert security forces in time to intercept them.
The attack, which has sent shockwaves through the close-knit community and beyond, marks yet another grim episode in the rising tide of kidnappings that have plagued rural communities across Ondo State and the broader South-West geopolitical zone in recent years.
The targeting of a traditional ruler, a figure who serves not merely as a community administrator but as a custodian of culture, peace, and local authority, signals a brazen escalation that security analysts say demands an urgent and decisive response.
According to sources within the community, the assailants appeared to have conducted prior surveillance of the Baale’s residence, moving with the kind of coordinated precision that suggested planning.
They reportedly overpowered those present at the compound with little resistance, seized their target, and disappeared into the bush path adjacent to the property within minutes.
The most alarming detail of the night’s violence was the injury sustained by the traditional ruler’s wife, who was shot in her right hand during the raid. The woman, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, was reportedly caught in the crossfire as the kidnappers subdued anyone who dared stand in their path.
She was subsequently rescued by community members and rushed to a nearby medical facility, where she is said to be responding positively to treatment.
By Sunday morning, the Ondo State Police Command had confirmed the abduction and moved swiftly to reassure the public that a coordinated rescue operation was firmly underway.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed the details of the incident and outlined the steps already taken by the command.
“The Ondo State Police Command has launched a coordinated rescue operation following the abduction of a community leader by suspected kidnappers in Ode Oriya Village, Owo Local Government Area of the state,” Jimoh stated, his tone measured but carrying the unmistakable weight of urgency.
According to the spokesman, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of B Division, Owo, wasted no time upon receiving the distress report, immediately mobilizing a combined team of police operatives and other security personnel to the scene. The area was quickly secured, and a preliminary assessment of the crime scene was conducted as part of initial investigative efforts.
Search and rescue teams have since been deployed to comb through nearby forests, bush paths, and suspected escape routes in what the command described as “a determined effort to track the movement of the kidnappers, secure the victim’s safe release, and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Tactical deployments have also reportedly been strengthened across Ode Oriya and its adjoining communities to prevent further attacks and cut off any possible escape corridors the kidnappers might attempt to exploit.
Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Felix Ohagwu, has personally directed all tactical units, intelligence assets, and operational teams under his command to intensify their efforts toward the twin objectives of rescuing the Baale and apprehending those responsible.
DSP Jimoh, relaying the commissioner’s directive, stated, “The command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring that the victim is reunited safely with his family while all those involved face the full weight of the law.”
Kidnapping operations in forested areas of Ondo State have, in the past, proven difficult to resolve quickly, with victims sometimes held for days or weeks while negotiations over ransom payments drag on in the shadows.
The abduction of Baale Adelana is not an isolated incident. Ondo State, and the Owo Local Government Area in particular, has been scarred by high-profile acts of violence in recent years.
The community still bears the wounds of the June 2022 St. Francis Catholic Church massacre in Owo, in which dozens of worshippers were killed in one of Nigeria’s most horrific terror attacks in recent memory.
Security experts and community leaders have repeatedly called for a more permanent and proactive security architecture in rural and semi-urban communities across the state, arguing that reactive policing alone cannot stem the tide of kidnappings, banditry, and violent crime increasingly afflicting such areas.
For now, however, the people of Ode Oriya can only wait and pray that their baale is returned to them alive and unharmed as security forces race against time deep in the forests of Ondo State.
