Uncertainty continues to trail the political ambition of the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, following reports that he may have stepped back from plans to contest the governorship election in Oyo State.

The speculation intensified after a document, believed to be his resignation letter, surfaced online. However, his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, dismissed the document as fake, maintaining that the minister remains in office.

According to Tunji, Adelabu is still actively discharging his duties and has not taken any step to resign from the cabinet of Bola Tinubu.

The situation comes amid reports of a March 30, 2026 deadline for political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down from their positions.

Adelabu, who has been linked to a possible governorship bid under the All Progressives Congress, had recently engaged in consultations with party stakeholders, raising expectations about his next political move.

However, when asked directly about his plans during a recent press briefing in Abuja, the minister declined to give a definitive answer.

“I am fully focused on my job as the Minister of Power,” he said.

With no official resignation confirmed and his team denying the authenticity of the circulating letter, it remains uncertain whether Adelabu will eventually enter the Oyo governorship race or continue serving in his current role.

What you should know

The uncertainty surrounding Adebayo Adelabu’s political future reflects the strategic decisions often faced by public office holders ahead of elections.

With a reported resignation deadline in place, his next move could significantly shape the political landscape in Oyo State.

While his consultations suggest interest in the race, his continued stay in office indicates caution, leaving both supporters and political observers awaiting a clear declaration of intent.
