The Cross River House of Assembly has suspended four councillors from the Akpabuyo Legislative Council for 90 days over alleged misconduct.

The decision was taken during plenary on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, after the lawmakers reviewed a petition submitted by two councillors, Emmanuel Archibong and Bassey Ekpo.

The petition accused the affected officials of harassment, intimidation and aggressive behaviour toward their colleagues.

Those suspended are Innocent Mbukpa, Patrick Etim, Bassey Edet and Tete Ubene.

While presenting the petition, the Deputy Leader of the House, Davies Etta, outlined claims that the councillors allegedly relied on cult groups to threaten fellow lawmakers, including the leader of the councillors’ association.

The petition also stated that the group reportedly attacked council staff on March 23, 2026, leaving some people injured and causing damage to property.

During deliberations, Francis Asuquo condemned the actions, noting that the accused officials did not follow proper procedures in handling their grievances.

Other members of the Assembly also backed the move, calling for peaceful ways of resolving disputes and describing the reported behaviour as unacceptable.

The lawmakers relied on provisions of the local government law that allow the Assembly to take action against officials facing allegations of misconduct.

They agreed that the suspension would remain in place while the Committee on Judiciary, Public Service, Petitions and Conflict Resolution investigates the matter.

Speaker of the House, Elvert Ayambem, expressed concern over the development and called on public office holders to maintain discipline and respect the rule of law in the discharge of their duties.
