Barely two days after resigning from the All Progressives Congress, former governorship aspirant in Plateau State, John Sura, has concluded plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress as he sets his sights on the 2027 governorship election.
Sura, a retired brigadier general from Panyam Ward in Mangu Local Government Area, the same council as Governor Caleb Mutfwang, had only joined the APC a year ago after leaving the Peoples Democratic Party.

In a resignation letter dated March 21, 2026, and addressed to the APC chairman in his ward, Sura confirmed that his decision to leave the party takes immediate effect, while expressing appreciation to the party leadership for their support during his brief stay.
Speaking with journalists in Jos, the Plateau State capital, Sura attributed his defection to what he described as leadership failure within the APC, stressing the urgent need for a change in governance to address insecurity and improve economic conditions in the state.
“The APC-led administration has done little to address the security challenges confronting the state.
The governor has a responsibility in this regard, just as the federal government does,” he said.
He further explained that his ambition goes beyond contesting for office, noting that his move is aimed at reshaping public consciousness and delivering meaningful impact.

“In a few days, I will come up with multiple reasons for my resignation from the APC. However, my main purpose is to leave an impactful legacy for our generation. I have the interest, and by the grace of God, I believe I will contest it.
“At the moment, it is quite unfortunate that no one is contesting against Mutfwang on the platform of the APC, and this is a dangerous situation.
“I want to carry the people’s empathy and the passion to serve. I will definitely throw my hat into the ring,” he declared.
Sura also dismissed claims that the ongoing wave of defections into the APC across the country would automatically secure victory for the party in 2027, insisting that the electorate would ultimately determine the outcome of the election.
