Caleb Mutfwang has clarified why he addressed a tense crowd from an armoured personnel carrier following the deadly Palm Sunday attack in Jos, stating that the move was purely for security and visibility purposes.

Speaking during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, the governor explained that he was positioned on the vehicle to gain height and effectively communicate with the crowd during a highly volatile situation.

He dismissed widespread speculation suggesting he was under direct threat, maintaining that his interaction with residents was largely calm and cooperative. According to him, members of the crowd reassured him of their safety and even encouraged him to come closer, which eventually allowed security personnel to ease restrictions.

Mutfwang argued that viral clips on social media misrepresented the situation, noting that they captured only a small portion of his engagement. He stressed that he spent most of his time among the people, consoling them, observing the aftermath of the attack, and working to calm tensions.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the governor said he felt safe among the residents, although security operatives remained cautious due to the unpredictable environment.

He revealed that he had been in Abuja attending official engagements, including activities around the All Progressives Congress National Convention and high-level security meetings, when news of the attack reached him.

According to him, he immediately made arrangements to return to Plateau State, with support from the presidential air fleet, arriving early the next morning. He noted that upon arrival, he intended to go straight to the scene, as aggrieved residents had insisted on seeing him before allowing authorities to evacuate victims.

However, the situation was complicated by the presence of individuals suspected of attempting to incite unrest in the area, including persons believed to be linked to drug-related activities.

Even with these risks, Mutfwang insisted on being physically present, emphasizing the importance of leadership during crisis moments. He acknowledged the responsibility of security personnel to protect him but maintained that showing up at the scene was necessary to reassure the public and restore calm.

The governor expressed appreciation to the people of Plateau State for their trust and confidence, reaffirming his commitment to stand with them during difficult times.

What you should know

Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s decision to address residents from an armoured vehicle was driven by safety concerns and the need for visibility in a tense situation.

Contrary to speculation, he was not under direct threat and later engaged closely with the crowd.

The incident highlights the fragile security situation in Plateau State and the importance of leadership presence during crises, especially as authorities work to restore calm after recent attacks.
