A Lagos Federal High Court was left in disarray on Thursday after Nollywood actress Doris Ogala skipped her arraignment, sparking a prosecution-defense clash that ended in a six-week adjournment and a stern judicial warning.
Ogala, who faces a four-count charge at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, is accused of publishing personal materials belonging to Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation Bible Ministry, cyberbullying and harassment, attempted extortion, and the dissemination of inciting and false information intended to incriminate the cleric.
The charges, brought under the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) The Amendment Act, 2024, represents one of the most high-profile celebrity cybercrime prosecutions in recent Nigerian legal history.
Her empty seat in the dock, however, nearly triggered a far more dramatic development. Prosecuting counsel Tolulope Mokuola wasted no time applying for a bench warrant to compel the actress’s appearance, citing her failure to attend despite having been duly served with a hearing notice.
A bench warrant, if granted, would have authorized law enforcement to arrest and forcibly produce her before the court, a humiliating prospect for a public figure who has, until now, been vocal about her willingness to fight the case.
The defense moved quickly to head off that outcome. Defense counsel Temiloluwa Akindayini told the court that Ogala had undergone a surgical procedure on April 21, 2026, and is currently recuperating in Abia State, adding that an affidavit deposing her medical condition was filed before the court on April 22, 2026.
The prosecution, however, was unconvinced — and unimpressed. Mokuola fired back, faulting the defense for failing to serve the affidavit on the prosecution and for not notifying them in advance of the alleged surgery. It was a pointed rebuttal, one that raised questions about whether the medical claim was a legitimate health crisis or a calculated delay tactic.
Presiding Justice Akintayo Aluko found himself threading a judicial needle: penalizing procedural sloppiness on the defense’s part without prejudicing the accused’s right to fair hearing. In the end, he tilted toward caution. Though the judge noted the procedural lapse on the part of the defense, he declined to grant the application for a bench warrant, holding that the interest of justice required that the defendant be given the benefit of the doubt, particularly as the affidavit was already before the court.
But Justice Aluko’s leniency came with sharp conditions. The actress must produce a comprehensive, verifiable medical report from a government hospital and ensure it is served on the prosecution before the next court date, and crucially, she must appear in person. The matter was consequently adjourned to June 9, 2026, for arraignment.
The case has its roots in one of Nigeria’s most publicly dramatic celebrity feuds in recent memory. Ogala had alleged she met Pastor Okafor in 2017 and maintained a relationship with him, leading to a bitter public fallout after he married another woman in December 2025.
She is accused of publishing nude and intimate images of the cleric without consent, as well as making serious allegations, including rape, ritual practices, and involvement in a death.
She is also alleged to have circulated videos and messages aimed at harassing and intimidating him, alongside threats to release further damaging content unless certain demands were met.
The Ikeja High Court had earlier, in January 2026, granted an interim restraining order barring Ogala from mentioning or referring to Pastor Okafor, his church, or ministry on any platform pending the determination of a separate civil suit. That order has done little to quiet the controversy, which has played out relentlessly on social media.
Sources close to the prosecution have insisted that Pastor Okafor is not orchestrating the criminal process, describing the case as strictly a state matter with the cleric serving only as the nominal complainant.
For her part, Ogala, who has previously boasted of a legal team that includes two Senior Advocates of Nigeria, has shown little sign of backing down. The actress has publicly shared legal documents on social media, emphasizing her readiness for a prolonged legal fight.
As June 9 approaches, all eyes will be on whether Ogala walks through the doors of Court 7 in Ikoyi under her own volition or whether Justice Aluko’s patience finally runs out.
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
The trial of Nollywood actress Doris Ogala on federal cybercrime charges, including alleged harassment, extortion, and publication of intimate materials belonging to Pastor Chris Okafor, has been delayed after she failed to appear in court, with her defense citing a recent surgery.
Justice Akintayo Aluko rejected the prosecution’s bid for a bench warrant, choosing to extend the actress the benefit of the doubt, but issued a firm ultimatum: she must present a verifiable medical report from a government hospital and appear in person for arraignment on June 9, 2026, no exceptions.
