Sean “Diddy” Combs’ path out of prison keeps shifting, and this time, it’s tangled up with reports of violence behind bars.
Records from the Federal Bureau of Prisons reviewed Wednesday show the disgraced music mogul, now 56, is projected for release on January 24, 2028, the third adjustment to his release date this year alone and the earliest date yet.
A spokesperson for Combs offered little insight into the change, telling media that “we do not have the necessary information to respond with any clarity” regarding the rescheduling.
Combs is serving a 50-month sentence at the low-security Federal Correctional Institution Fort Dix in New Jersey, following his October 2025 conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.
He was acquitted of the more serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges that could have kept him in prison for life. Alongside the prison term, he was ordered to serve five years of supervised release and pay a $500,000 fine.
His release date has been a moving target almost from the start. Originally projected for release in May 2028, that date was later pushed to June 4, 2028, before a string of accelerations: April 25, then February 23, and now January 24, 2028.
The latest shift comes on the heels of reports that Combs was involved in a physical altercation with a fellow inmate at Fort Dix.
According to sources cited by multiple media outlets, another inmate made a remark toward Combs that led to a confrontation, which reportedly prompted him to take “matters into his own hands,” and he was said to have “held his own” before staff separated the two. Combs was reportedly placed in solitary confinement, though officials have not confirmed how long that placement lasted.
Prison officials have declined to discuss specifics. A Fort Dix spokesperson told TMZ, “We are not at liberty to disclose or provide internal information about any inmate in our custody. Such information would not be available for the public domain.”
The optics of an inmate’s release date moving closer right after an alleged fight have drawn public skepticism.
The Bureau of Prisons has not explained the mechanics behind the adjustment, though outlets have noted that participation in approved prison programming, including substance abuse treatment and educational initiatives, can factor into earned-time credit calculations that shift a projected release date, even as the agency stops short of detailing how that applies in Combs’ specific case.
Not everyone is satisfied with that explanation. Combs’ case has drawn continued legal sparring, with at least one attorney publicly arguing the mogul “should be serving his full sentence,” following news of the latest adjustment.
For now, barring further changes, and this saga suggests more could come, Combs has roughly a year and a half left on his sentence before his projected walk-out of Fort Dix.
