Gunmen who abducted several worshippers during an attack on a Christ Apostolic Church parish in Ekiti State have demanded a ransom of ₦1 billion for the release of the victims.

Residents of Eda Oniyo in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of the state, where the incident occurred, remain gripped by fear and uncertainty following the deadly assault.

The attackers reportedly stormed the church during a revival programme at about 7:15 p.m., shooting for more than 30 minutes before abducting 15 worshippers into a nearby forest.

The attack also claimed the life of a visiting pastor, while families of the abducted victims continue to await updates on efforts to secure their release.

Community leaders have intensified calls for improved security presence in the area, urging the state government to consider suspending evening religious gatherings and other late-night activities temporarily to prevent further attacks.

In response to the incident, the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Michael Falade, visited the affected community and ordered the immediate deployment of a joint security task force made up of police officers, military personnel and other security operatives to carry out coordinated bush-combing operations.

Ekiti Abducted Worshippers

Falade assured residents that security agencies are making every effort to ensure the safe rescue of all abducted victims.

“We will do everything within our capacity to ensure those kidnapped are rescued alive and reunited with their families,” he said during his visit.

The traditional ruler of the community, the Eleda of Eda Oniyo, Oba Julius Oladipo Owodola, condemned the attack, describing it as disturbing and deeply unfortunate.

He appealed to both the state and federal governments to strengthen security architecture across the community and neighbouring areas, which residents say have become increasingly exposed to violent attacks.

Security operations are ongoing, although authorities have yet to confirm any progress regarding negotiations or the release of the victims.

What You Should Know

The latest attack in Ekiti highlights the growing security challenges facing rural communities across parts of Nigeria.

The demand for ₦1 billion ransom has heightened concerns over the increasing sophistication and boldness of kidnappers targeting worship centres and vulnerable gatherings.

Security agencies have intensified rescue efforts, but the incident has triggered renewed calls for stronger surveillance, better intelligence gathering, and proactive protection of remote communities to curb further attacks and restore public confidence.
