Falz Links Tinubu’s Name to ‘Hardship’ in Blunt Interview Response

Popular Nigerian rapper and social activist, Folarin Falana, widely known by his stage name Falz, has once again taken a public stand against the current state of governance in Nigeria, openly associating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s name with the word “hardship.”

In a recent interview with Soundcity, the award-winning artist, known for fusing music with political commentary, was asked what came to mind when he hears the name of Nigeria’s president. With a cold and cutting response, Falz replied, “Hardship. No elaboration.”

The statement, though brief, echoes a growing sentiment among Nigerians battling soaring inflation, economic hardship, and insecurity across the nation. Falz’s choice of words adds to his longstanding criticism of the ruling elite, especially under Tinubu’s administration.

This is not the first time the “This Is Nigeria” crooner has taken a swipe at the presidency. Just last month, Falz reacted with outrage on X (formerly Twitter) to President Tinubu’s delayed and, in his view, inadequate response to the massacre of over 200 civilians in Benue State. In a strongly worded post, Falz accused Tinubu of dereliction of duty.

“You have consistently shown that you are incapable of performing the primary duty of securing the lives and property of your citizens. This routine statement does not cut it.”

The criticism came after widespread social media uproar over President Tinubu’s initial silence on the killings, which many deemed as indifference to the plight of ordinary Nigerians. Eventually, Tinubu released a statement condemning the violence and pledging decisive action by security agencies.

“Enough is enough,” the president said. “I have been briefed on the senseless bloodletting in Benue State… I have directed the security agencies to act decisively.”

He further urged political and community leaders to avoid inciting violence and charged Governor Hyacinth Alia to spearhead reconciliation efforts in the troubled region.

However, critics like Falz argue that these words have become too familiar — a cycle of promises, condolences, and delayed actions — while the situation on ground continues to deteriorate.

Falz, who has previously led protests against police brutality and electoral malpractice, remains a vocal symbol of youth resistance and political consciousness in Nigeria’s entertainment industry. His latest remarks reinforce his image as a fearless voice against what he calls the “persistent failure of leadership” in Africa’s largest democracy.

As frustration mounts among citizens over economic downturns and widespread insecurity, voices like Falz’s are echoing louder — demanding accountability, transparency, and above all, action.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Falz has openly criticized President Tinubu, linking his name to “hardship” and accusing him of failing to protect Nigerians, especially in light of the recent Benue killings—highlighting growing public frustration with the government’s performance.
