Process to recall Nigerian senator begins

Youths and residents of Osun East Senatorial District have begun process to recall Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi from the National Assembly over an alleged inciting statement he made during the 2026 Osun State governorship election.

The development followed a peaceful protest staged by members of the Coalition of Osun East Youths and Concerned Citizens in Ilesa, Osun State, on Wednesday.

The protesters, who carried placards, gathered at the Enuwa Roundabout before moving through Isokun and the Ilesa Market Square. The procession later ended at the entrance of the Owa-Obokun Palace.

The protesters accused Fadahunsi of making a statement capable of causing tension during the election period.

They also faulted his performance as the senator representing Osun East, alleging that he had failed to adequately represent the interests of his constituents.

The senator had earlier rejected the alleged statement attributed to him in a viral video.

Fadahunsi said the video circulated during a protest by members of the All Progressives Congress over alleged attacks on their supporters had been manipulated and released to damage his reputation.

Speaking during the protest, one of the organisers, Olorunfemi Olatunji, said the demonstration was the first step in the planned effort to remove Fadahunsi from office through the constitutional recall process.

He said the group had already submitted a petition and was preparing to take further legal steps, including travelling to Abuja as part of the process.

Olatunji also accused the senator of poor representation and said the constituents were unhappy with his conduct during the 2026 election campaign.

The protesters said they would proceed with the recall process after the demonstration in Ilesa, adding that the necessary legal procedures had been prepared.

The Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Osun State, Akinbode Olakolupo, also joined the call for action against the senator.

Olakolupo called for a proper investigation into allegations of incitement, threats, killings and political violence associated with the election period.

He also urged security agencies to intensify efforts to recover illegal firearms allegedly being used by political thugs and criminals in the state.
