Fresh political tension appears to be unfolding in Kogi State after Senator Jibrin Echocho openly accused the administration of Governor Usman Ododo of working against him following the Kogi East senatorial primary election.

Echocho, who currently represents Kogi East in the Senate, suffered a heavy defeat in Monday’s primary election, losing by a wide margin to party aspirant Ericco.

The outcome has triggered fresh conversations within the state’s political space, with many observers interpreting the result as a possible sign of shifting alliances within the ruling political structure.

Speaking in a video now circulating on social media while addressing supporters after the exercise, the senator expressed deep disappointment over the outcome and suggested that influential political actors deliberately moved against him.

“I have been very supportive of your administration. I have been loyal to you, Usman Ododo, and Yahaya Bello. Why do you want to deny Kogi East the best representation ever?” he said.

Kogi East primary election

Echocho also claimed that before the primary election, he had no intention of contesting against the current political leadership in the state.

However, he hinted that the latest development may have altered his political calculations.

“I have told everybody who cares to listen that I don’t want to contest for governor. Since you’re now out to fight me, that battle line has been drawn,” he added.

His comments have fueled speculation about possible political realignments ahead of the next governorship election in Kogi State, scheduled for November 2027.

Political analysts believe the senator’s remarks may signal the beginning of a broader power struggle within the state’s ruling camp, particularly if he eventually decides to challenge the existing political order.

The development also raises questions about internal cohesion within the state’s political establishment as preparations gradually begin for future contests.

What You Should Know

Senator Jibrin Echocho’s reaction to his primary election defeat could mark the start of a major political confrontation within Kogi State’s ruling structure.

His direct comments against Governor Usman Ododo and former Governor Yahaya Bello suggest growing discontent that may reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 governorship race. If Echocho decides to contest for governor, it could trigger a fierce internal battle capable of altering the balance of power within the state.

The coming months will likely determine whether this remains post-primary frustration or evolves into a full-scale political rivalry.
