Nigerian Grammy winner Burna Boy has added another entry to his growing list of career milestones, as his World Cup collaboration with Colombian superstar Shakira, “Dai Dai,” officially becomes the highest charting World Cup anthem in Billboard Hot 100 history.
The song, whose full title carries the tag “FIFA World Cup Official Song 2026,” surged 25 places this week to a new peak of No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100, up from No. 42.
In doing so, it overtook Shakira’s own 2010 World Cup classic “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” her collaboration with South African band Freshlyground, which had held the record for 16 years after peaking at No. 38.
The achievement caps a remarkable run for the track, which Shakira and Burna Boy first performed before more than 80,000 fans at the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca on June 11.
The song received a further lift after the pair reunited for the tournament’s first-ever World Cup final halftime show on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, an 11-minute set that also featured Justin Bieber, BTS, and Madonna.
That performance drove a fresh wave of streaming activity, with the song adding nearly 8.6 million official U.S. streams and a 322 percent jump in sales in a single tracking week, according to data compiled by Luminate.
For Shakira, the milestone extends an already historic Hot 100 résumé, giving her 13 top-40 hits across a career spanning almost 25 years. For Burna Boy, it marks his second top-40 entry on the chart and his first as a lead artist, further cementing his standing as one of Afrobeats’ foremost global ambassadors.
“Dai Dai” has not been confined to American shores. The track also climbed to a new peak of No. 3 on the Canadian Hot 100 this week, and it is currently locked in a tight race for the top spot on the UK Official Singles Chart.
Beyond North America and Britain, the single has previously topped the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. The U.S. charts, the first World Cup anthem ever to do so while also registering multiple No. 1 runs on national charts in Colombia, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Belgium, and elsewhere, alongside a stint atop the Latin Airplay chart.
The record-breaking run comes in the same window as a symbolic changing of the guard at Billboard: the publication has discontinued its World Digital Song Sales chart, with the final issue dated June 27, 2026.
For more than a decade, the chart tracked the best-selling digital singles within the world music genre, spotlighting commercially successful songs from Nigeria, other parts of Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean that often received limited attention on Billboard’s flagship rankings.
Nigerian stars such as Wizkid, Mr. Eazi, and Rema have all topped the chart in years past, a track record that underscores just how central Afrobeats and its offshoots became to the chart’s identity before its retirement.
The juxtaposition is notable: as one of Billboard’s dedicated platforms for globally minded, non-Western pop acts closes out, a Nigerian-Colombian collaboration is simultaneously smashing records on the very mainstream charts that platform once helped feed into. Evidence, industry watchers say, of how thoroughly artists like Burna Boy have moved from the margins of the U.S. charts to their center.
With the World Cup now concluded and “Dai Dai” still gaining ground on multiple fronts, the song appears positioned to remain a fixture on global charts for weeks to come.
